Error opening document. File is already open.

Occasionally all the computers in our work center get this message when trying to open PDFs with Adobe Reader: "There was an error opening this document. This file is already open or in use by another application." The files are stored in a shared folder on our network. By the next day the problem is usually gone. What causes the problem, and how do we fix it?
