"error reading stream"

I keep getting the same error with each Adobe file I open saying "error reading stream" with multiple pages missing information. I have tried all the suggestions in the community including turning off ehanced security and restarting, checking for updates, repairing the install, I even completely uninstalled the program and installed it again. I finally downloaded another company's free PDF reader and it worked perfectly and all my information was there in the same PDF file I was trying to open with Adobe. I would like to continue using Adobe, but I may have to transfer all of our client to the other PDF reader if I can't find a resolution to this problem.
