Find feature in Adobe Reader

How can I get the FIND/SEARCH feature in Adobe Reader turned on? I have a PDF file. The FIND feature does not work on it. I type in a word to search for, the response is COULD NOT FIND, even though I am looking at the word in the document. What can I do?
