Free versions of reader

Is Acrobat Reader 7 the "highest" level that is available for free? I'm trying to open a document that requires 8 or higher. When I try to download, the "box" says that I have 7 installed (true) but doesn't offer an opportunity to upgrade.

I tried to download a file and received the message that the file required Adobe Reader 8.0 or higher to be opened. When I click on properties, all I see is Acrobat Reader DC. Perhaps I do have the latest version and the problem is with the site from which I'm trying to download a doc.

This just means that you are using a browser that uses its own pdf viewer and not the Reader plug-in. Not much you can do to fix the browser but instead of opening it in that browser, right-click the "link" to the pdf file, save it to your computer and use File>Open from within Reader itself to open the pdf. If I had to guess, I would say you are trying to view a form. The other pdf viewers the browsers use stink at opening certain types of forms.

TADA! Right-clicked on "Open link in new window" and the document downloaded. I'm using Chrome and I have the Chrome compatibility "thingy" checked.

Thanks to all for the suggestions!

Glad that worked. Yeah, Chrome is one of the browsers that use their own viewer.

Ate you reading the message in a browser window? If so which browser? What are the exact words?

What makes you say that all you have on your computer is Acrobat Reader 7? Are you reading a message in a browser window?

You will only find one version via download link which will be the latest version.

All versions since 2.0 have been free, but you have to download each new version.

Thanks--I've already done that and I get the message "Adobe Acrobat Reader DC: Newer version already installed."  However, all I have on my computer is Acrobat Reader 7.

That is the only available version of acrobat reader.
