Gray screen

When I scan material with my Brother MFC-7860DW using Adobe Acrobat Reader (2019010.20098) on my Mac (10.14.3) I get a gray screen that will not open with Adobe Acrobat Reader . However, it opens just fine in Preview. Can you help me figure out what is causing this?

Go to Edit (or the app menu if you're on a Mac) - Preferences - Page Display and tick "Show large images".
