Gray screen in Acrobat Reader DC on my iMac (not in a browser) running OS Sierra

I sometimes get a gray screen in Acrobat Reader DC on my iMac running OS Sierra. The pdf is on my computer  (not in a browser) and I am trying to open it.

iMac Intel; OS Sierra 10.12. 3; Acrobat Reader DC 2015.023.20056.

I've seen patches and fixes in the forum, but they all seem to deal with grey screens when opening pdf's in a browser.

Add-on to posting above: I have no problem opening the pdfs in an old copy of Acrobat Pro 9 or Apple Preview.
