How can I recover unsaved document?

The notes and markups I took on a PDF in the Reader application have disappeared, how can I restore them?

Did the application crash, or did you not save the file when closing it? Or something else?

Also, did you enable the option to save the files automatically every X minutes as a temporary file (under Preferences - Documents)?
