How to stop Adobe Acrobat from Automatically Opening Downloaded PDF Files?

Hi Everyone,

I am currently Downloading PDF Files from my Gmail account to my Desktop.

Up until today, I was able to Download these files no problem.

Today however, everytime that a PDF Files completes downloading from Gmail to my Desktop, Adobe Acrobat Automatically Opens the file on my Computer.

This is Driving me MAD!

Is there any way to stop this from happening?

I've attached a file that I got from a Reddit post - where other people were having this issue.

It seems that in the past, that there was a check-box option in Acrobat Reader under Edit -> Preferences -> General  to turn off this annoying features. But this option is missing on my Acrobat Reader.

So, the supposed "solution" (posted May 06, 2024) whereby you switch those Chrome settings back-n-forth did NOT work for me (and yes, I closed the browser and re-opened it before trying agian).

I did find a way, though (see the attached JPG image):  Go to Menu [top, left] > Preferences > General, and uncheck these 2 settings:

  • Always open PDFs from printer.
    • *(This was the one that did it for me, since I was using "Print to PDF" at the time.)
  • Always open PDFs saved from the web.

 Hi @efficient_Wizard796b,

Thank you for reaching out. Based on your description, I understand that you're unable to locate the settings on the Acrobat web page. We genuinely appreciate the time and effort you’ve invested in testing the behaviour.

To access the webpage setting please check the below steps :

  • Open Acrobat on the web and sign in with your Adobe ID.
  • Click your Profile icon in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  • Scroll down to Auto-open (Automatically open downloaded, exported, and compressed files in new tab).
  • Turn Auto-open off and save the changes.

Please let us know if updating the above settings helps resolve the issue.

If you continue to experience the same behaviour, could you please share a few additional details so we can investigate further?

  1. From where are you downloading the PDF file?
  2. Once downloaded, where is the file opening (for example Acrobat desktop app or Acrobat web)
  3. What troubleshooting steps or settings have you already tried?

If possible, please share a short screen recording of the workflow you're following. This will help us better understand the behaviour and assist you more effectively.

Regards,

Priyanka Vishwakarma

As of June 2026, what worked for me was:

On macOS : Make Preview the default PDF app

  1. Find any PDF file in Finder.
  2. Right-click the PDF and select Get Info.
  3. Under Open with, click the dropdown menu.
  4. Select Preview (or another PDF app you prefer).
  5. Click Change All...
  6. Confirm by clicking Continue.

Now all your PDFs should open in Preview instead of Adobe. At least it does for me now! :)

I posted a Regedit solution over here. Adobe will not let me post it here.

It never saves my setting and always reverts back.

Please fire the person that thought this was a good default option. Especially since ya’ll shove AI down our throats and Acrobat take 3x as long to open.

I do not have this option in my settings as of March 2026 in New Adobe.  Very frustrating.

Try disabling the new version. It was in the menu option for me and that was the only thing that worked!

This is no longer the correct answer. Please see the one pointing to  edit preferences in Adobe reader

choose general

uncheck "Always open pdfs saved from the web"

As of October 2025 --

Step 1: From the viewing window, select the three lines (kebab or hamburger ellipses) at the upper left corner. You can also use the CTRL+K button combination to open the preferences window as well.

Step 2: Select "Preferences.

Step 3: Select "General" in the "Categories" table on the left side.

Step 4: Unselect the "Always open PDFS saved from the web" box.

Step 5: Click "Okay" at the bottom of the window.

You need to go to your Adobe.Acrobat.com (online) account > hit you rprofile pic (top right) > select settings.
The open to turn off this feature is at the bottom.

This seems to have worked for me today, the “Always open PDFs saved from the web" option isn’t there on my app but the web version gave me the setting shown above and so far, it seems to be working.

As of 08/26/26, this worked for me as well. I also updated my Chrome settings already, but there is no option to adjust in the Adobe app directly. I had to use my online account.

from my end it looks like that despite I have this not marked adobe is opening from default all downloaded pdf's
I hate Adobe more and more after recent changes - it's so aggresive in system and I am not able to change updates settings like pop-ups, display theme always coming back to light every morning and what is the most annoying - reminder to set adobe default, preferences window is not fitting the screen and there is no option to resize.

- "restore last view" does not work

- "disable new acrobat" does not work as well

I agree. The new Adobe is a dis-improvement. "Aggressive" is exactly the word.
