Hyperlinks to FAQ page not opening from exported PDF (Acrobat Reader)

Hi everyone,

I'm running into an issue with external web links inside a PDF document viewed in Adobe Acrobat Reader (latest desktop version on Windows 11).

We compiled our onboarding documentation from InDesign/Word and included a direct link to our web resource:

https://onyxgrowthlabs.com/faq/

When clicking this link inside the document:

  • The cursor changes to the hand icon as expected.

  • However, when clicked, either nothing happens or Acrobat hangs for a couple of seconds without launching the default browser (Chrome/Edge).

  • Other standard links (like google.com) appear to open fine, but this specific URL structure or protocol doesn't trigger the browser prompt.

I've already checked:

  1. Preferences > Trust Manager > Internet Access from PDF Files (it is set to allow web access).

  2. Tried running Acrobat Reader as Administrator.

Is there a specific security or URL formatting requirement in Acrobat Reader that blocks certain secure (HTTPS) subdirectories or causes external links to silently fail? Any suggestions on what settings or document properties I should inspect?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi @adaptable_workmanshipe075

I hope you are doing well, and thanks for the detailed description. I’m sorry to hear that the link to your FAQ page doesn’t open from your PDF.

Since other links open fine and this one doesn’t, Protected Mode and Enhanced Security in Acrobat Reader may be blocking this particular host. Could you please try the following:

    1. For testing only, turn off Protected Mode by going to Preferences (Ctrl, Cmd+K) > Security (Enhanced), deselecting “Enable Protected Mode at startup”, and turning off the ‘Protected Mode ’, then closing and reopening Acrobat Reader. Then click the link again and see if it opens.

    2. Turn Protected Mode back on after testing, as it is not recommended to keep it enabled for everyday use. For more information, please check the help page: Protected Mode troubleshooting.

    3. If turning off Protected Mode works fine, please add your host name (https://adobe.ly/4zg08zY) as a privileged location so the link opens with Protected Mode enabled. To learn how, please check the help page: Specify privileged locations for trusted content.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards

    Amal
