I created a fillable form. with Pro. In Adobe reader, it says I need to make a copy but then fails to create copy.

My steps

Upload document to prepare form.

Fill in all forms.

Download.

When I open with a regular adobe reader (as my clients would), it says to modify you should create a copy.  I select create copy.  However, it just loads and loads and then says failed.

What are my options?

Hello @stevie_6535

I hope you are doing well, and thanks for reaching out.

Adobe Reader cannot modify or save changes to a form unless it has been “Reader-enabled.” This must be done in Acrobat Pro before sharing the form:

  • In Acrobat Pro, go to Menu > Save As Other > Reader Extended PDF > Enable More Tools (includes form fill-in & save).
  • Save the file with a new name and distribute that version to clients.
  • Check this article for more information: https://adobe.ly/3HIMGim

Ensure the form allows modifications:

  • Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro.
  • Go to Menu > Document Properties > Security.
  • Confirm that form filling and saving are permitted.

Use Fill & Sign Instead of “Create Copy”: Adobe Reader users should use the Fill & Sign tool to complete forms rather than trying to “create a copy,” which is intended for collaborative workflows and may fail if the form isn’t properly enabled. See this article for steps: https://adobe.ly/3HnjJIR

I hope this helps, and let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Anand Sri.

Wow!  Thank you SO MUCH.  That was the issue - the way that it was saved.  It was able to filled and open on other platforms besides Adobe as well.  I really appreciate your help and instructions!
