I have spent over an hour trying to download the free trial for Ad. Acr. Reader and am constantly being told that the installer fails. Why ?

There's no trial version of Reader, as it's a free application. So what exactly are you trying to install?

As per the description given above, that Adobe Reader isn't installing. I assume that you are working on Windows computer and if the installation isn't going through you may follow the troubleshooting suggested in help document-

Troubleshoot Adobe Acrobat Reader installation | Windows

If that doesn't help then try the installation in hidden Administrator account and check if that works.
