ID to expire

On Saturday I received an e-mail reputedly from Adobe that my ID would expire unless I logged in. To log in I needed a password. I do not remember having a password, so I arranged a new password. A subsequent e-mail asked me if I had asked for a change of password. Was the issue initiated by Adobe or was the whole thing a scam/ virus with security risks.???
