Install latest Adobe Reader 32-bit version 26.002.21931 on Windows 8.1 64-bit Toshiba laptop

I’ve been trying to install the latest version (26.002.21931) of Adobe Reader 32-bit on a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8.1 64-bit but I keep getting the same error (see error.png) followed by the setup ending without installing anything (see setup_after_error.png).

I tried installing from the following:

(which I’ve been using since 2016 on the same laptop & OS without any problem)

(1) https://get.adobe.com/reader/ which auto-detects my OS and Language and offers version 2026.02.21901 (see autodetect.png)

(2) https://adobe.ly/4hll69W which redirects to https://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/?linkId=100000438784570 where after filling Operating System (Windows 8) and Language (English) it offers version 2026.02.21901 (see direct.png)

(3) https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/ReleaseNotesDC/index.html from where I tried each Adobe Reader 32-bit .msp for versions 26.002.21931 and 26.002.21901 and 26.002.21869

I had Adobe Reader 32-bit version 2026.001.21771 installed and tried all the above but kept getting the same error.

I tried installing the Adobe Reader 32-bit version 2026.001.21789 .msp and it installed OK and is working. I retried all the above but kept getting the same error again.

The system requirements (both the popup and the full page https://helpx.adobe.com/reader/desktop/system-requirements.html) state that Adobe Reader 32-bit can be installed on Windows 8.1 64-bit (see SysReq.png + SysReqpage.png).

Hi balanced_glamour61d3,

Thank you for reaching out, and sorry for the trouble caused.

Support for Windows 8 and 8.1 was discontinued starting with Acrobat version 26.001.21651. As a result, the latest versions of Acrobat are not tested on Windows 8 and 8.1. This is likely the reason you are unable to install the latest version on your machine. For more information, please refer to the following page: System requirement changes.

The document you mentioned outlines the general requirements for the bit version supported by each respective Windows operating system

Hope the information helps.

Thanks,

Meenakshi

Hi Meenakshi,

Thank you very much for your reply that resolves the problem.

I think that a multinational company like Adobe operating for 40+ years should be more considerate of the millions (or even billions) of people that use its products and/or services.

It would take very little time to make all the necessary updates on all the relevant pages.

(I speak from experience as I’ve been a software developer for years).

You say that “Support for Windows 8 and 8.1 was discontinued starting with Acrobat version 26.001.21651.”

So I take it that the immediately previous version 26.001.21563 was the last one supporting Windows 8 and 8.1. But version 26.001.21563 was released more than 4 months ago on May 18, 2026 (https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/ReleaseNotesDC/continuous/dccontinuousapr2026qfe2.html).

So the pages https://get.adobe.com/reader/ and https://adobe.ly/4hll69W (https://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/?linkId=100000438784570) should have reflected that immediately. They are supposed to offer the supported version for any detected OS on the first page and any selected OS on the second page.

I checked about an hour ago and they both still offer version 2026.002.21931 for Windows 8/8.1 (which fails to install).

You say that the system requirements on https://helpx.adobe.com/reader/desktop/system-requirements.html are general but neither the word ‘general’ nor any other word or phrase having the same meaning appear anywhere on the page.

Furthermore there is no mention of version specific system requirements and/or system requirements changes (along with a link) that might override the requirements on this page.

The wording of the system requirements on the page is absolute meaning there are no exceptions.

Why should someone check anything else or look anywhere else?

It should be better if it said something like “until Acrobat Reader version x” on the same line as the operating system it refers to.

For example: “Windows 8, 8.1 (32 bit and 64 bit) until Acrobat Reader version 26.001.21563”

The page is short and comprehensive and takes only 1-2 minutes to read (excluding the sections one does not need; for example I don’t need the Mac or Mobile sections).

It should also provide a link to the helpful ‘System requirement changes’ page you provided (https://adobe.ly/4hntJQ4) for everyone who wants more extensive information.

Alas that page takes very much longer to read.

I don’t mean to sound grumpy but consider 2 things:

(1) The time you wasted answering my question and the time I wasted doing all those failed installations and creating an account and posting a question. Furthermore there might be other users who have the same problem and have wasted their time and/or the time of someone who does what you do (or even your time again if you had to reply to other people with the same problem).

(2) Having to read long pages from every vendor whose products and/or services one uses (I’m referring to anything a person might use, from needles to space software) would leave little or no time for anything else (food, drink, sleep, work, amusement, etc.).

Again thank you very much for your reply that resolves the problem.

And thank you for your time if you read until here.

This whole post should be passed to the department of Adobe that handles consumer complaints. I hope it has one.

Please, could you tell me how to do it or could you pass it yourself?

Sorry to trouble you further but I don’t know how to do it and who else to ask.

Kind regards,

Paul
