Insufficient data for an image

Hi!

I generated a PDF for a customer which contains text and images. I get the images from our customer. Sometimes, when we open the PDFs we get the following error: "Insufficient data for an image".

I tried several fixes and read all the information about that error, but I'm not able to fix the problem. I know the specific image which causes the error but could not find any suspicious information which help me to solve the problem.

Here is a link to the image: https://p66i.imgup.net/funktionie1154.jpg

I also checked if the image in an JPEG2000 image, but the hex representation starts with "FF D8 FF E0" which determines, that it is a simple JPEG image.

The PDF can be opened in Chrome, FoxitReader, Edge....but not in Adobe Reader DC and Internet Explorer 11 (which uses the Adobe Reader DC).

I'm using Windows 10 and our customer uses a Mac (both have the same problem).

I use the actual Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (15.023.20070)

Thx in advance

Michael

Hi guys,

I could solve my problem. I contacted the manufacturer of the pdf library (Ibex pdf) I used to generate the pdf.

We could identify the problem:

"What is happening is that the jpeg is not properly formed, and the header which Ibex normally reads is missing, so Ibex is assuming it is color when in fact it its greyscale, I'll see if we can fix that."
Ibex released a new version of their library and it's working now!

Sorry guys, thats not a general solution for the "Insufficient data for an image"-problem.

I don't have a specific answer to a fix but I can say that Adobe products are very picky about opening pdf files that are not fully compliant. If you are using a third party tool to create these pdf files, that is more than likely the issue and since it is not an Adobe product creating these files, you are not likely to get support from Adobe. Other pdf viewers don't care as much. Adobe is only trying to enforce using proper pdf specifications that third party tools don't always meet.

While we are using the built in PDF printer in Intuit's Quickbooks Enterprise 2017, only 1 workstation is having the problem as far as I know and the Adobe Reader Plugin, not a third party app, for Chrome can open the files.

We also have not made any changes to QuickBooks since it was working. Adobe Reader is set to auto update so the change that has caused the PDF's to throw this error either came from Adobe updating or a windows Update.

As for Adobe enforcing something in the PDF that is somehow missing or incorrect that other viewers can work around, including the Adobe Chrome Plugin, can that be turned off in the Adobe Reader Application? If so it is not really a solution but it would be a temporary workaround.

We are having the same/similar issue with one of our clients.

They are creating the PDF as part of the invoicing process within QuickBooks 2017 Enterprise.

When opening the document in the latest version of Adobe Reader DC, Adobe Reader XI, Adobe Reader X, and Adobe Reader 9 we receive the following:

"Insufficient data for an image."

The document will still show in the reader if you scroll through it but print preview only shows a blank page. Through the Adobe Reader Plugin for Chrome the document will open without issue and it can be imported/converted by Microsoft Word 2013 without issue. We have also been able to preview the attachment in both Outlook and Mac Mail applications.

It seams to only be within Adobe Reader applications that the problem exists, both Windows and Mac installs.

I can provide the document in question if it will help to get a resolution to the issue.
