MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) w/ Spaces: make PDF document open in current screen

When I upgraded to MacOS Mojave, I decided to replace Adobe Reader 11.0.23 with Adobe Reader DC since Reader XI was apparently not being updated anymore.  I use Spaces (multiple virtual screens) on MacOS.  While 11.0.23 worked fine, DC is extremely annoying because when I open a new document, it opens it up in the virtual screen where DC was started (I think).  In any case it does not open it in my current active screen which is what I want.  I found a mildly old post where someone else had the same problem and they claimed it could be fixed by unchecking the 'open new document in new tab in the same window" preference.  That does not seem to work for me.

I would really appreciate it if someone could offer me a solution that works.  If I can't find one, I may have to find an alternative pdf viewer/minor editor - it is that annoying.  Thank you.
