MAJOR BUG ! : Acrobat Reader had DESTROYED and CANCELLED a file from my Hard Disk !!!

After opening a file to check it, I modified the file name on the directory.
Of course the name change can occur only when I close the file.
Closing the file Reader asked if I had to save changes to the file: but I did NOT make any change.
And I needed the file stay what it was.
So I pressed "NO"
The file disappeared from Reader window AND from the DIRECTORY TOO !!!
Of course this is a MAJOR BUG and also INTRUSION on personal Hardware devices.
How can this be possible ?

Hi @ernestoz54200907,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience — and I’m really sorry to hear this happened. Losing a file, especially when it seems like the app you’re trusting might be involved, can be incredibly frustrating and unsettling.

Acrobat Reader is Read-Only by Design

Just to clarify, Adobe Acrobat Reader is designed to be a read-only application. It doesn’t have the ability to delete or cancel files on its own — especially after a rename. It only saves changes when you choose Save or Save As.

Based on What You Shared

You mentioned trying to rename the file after closing it in Reader. A few things could be happening here:

  • The Reader app may not have fully released the file from memory when you renamed it

  • A cloud sync service (like OneDrive or Dropbox) or security software may have flagged the renamed file and removed it

  • If the file was opened from a temporary location (like an email attachment), it could have been auto-deleted by the system

This type of issue is rare, but we completely understand how distressing it is — and it deserves to be looked into carefully.

What You Can Try

  • Check your Recycle Bin, or use a file recovery tool like Recuva

  • Search your system for the file name or *.pdf

  • Check likely folders: %temp%, Downloads, or email attachment directories

Still Experiencing This?

If you notice this happens again, it would be a huge help if you could share a short screen recording showing the steps. We can then better understand what’s going on and work with the right teams to investigate further.

Again, we're really sorry this happened, and thank you for bringing it to our attention. We’re here to help however we can.

Best regards,
