I'm new to using AR for my PDF files. Got one today and found I could not edit it. I get a box asking if I have the latest download, which I have, but it won't allow basic editing. My fault obviously, but what should I do ( no sarcasm please!)

The free Acrobat Reader is only for viewing PDFs not for editing. For the latter you'll need Acrobat DC instead.
