Question

Malware associated with "Adobe update" routine

I have a search engine in my Chrome default named "SearchMine". I cannot remove it; it showed up when I thought I was updating my Adobe applications. I deleted all of my Adobe apps and then downloaded the installer for Reader (AcroRdrCD_19012200.36_MUI.pkg). The installer was terminated because it said there was a newer version available. I just downloaded it this morning; I am suspicious the "newer version" is related to a Malware.

There are different solutions offered in this link ; one of them seems to be the correct answer for some of the users: https://community.adobe.com/t5/Acrobat-Reader/Reader-download-fails-Newer-version-already-installed-How-to-fix/td-p/9289555

Since your concerns are also geared towards a suspicion of malicious code in your system you also want to learn how to protect your browser from leaking your network's internal IP address: https://buffered.com/privacy-security/how-to-disable-webrtc-in-various-browsers/

You did not mentioned if you uninstall the Chrome browser, however, if you downloaded an off-line installer version of the Acrobat Reader DC product be advised that during the installation it will have checked by default to install Chrome browser and tool bar extension. You may want to uncheck those two options before installing Acrobat Reader.

There's an extensive article on the Searchmine hijack virus here, and it includes links on how to remove it from both the Mac and Windows OS.
