Old pdf not recognized?

Hello,

I keep over a hundred DVDs of files copied from CDs accumulated since 1998. I recently retieved a PDF document and attempted to open with Adobe Reader.

The program infomed me, via an error message popup, that the file was damaged and could not be repaired.

I dregged the file onto/into the Chrome browser and the file opened readily and correctly.

The file contained nothing more than an image of an engineering drawing. I opened the file in a text editor (notepad++) and the tag read "%PDF-1.4", menaing the Adobe verison used to create the file was 1.4. That was along time ago, in internet terms. Still, you'd think Adobe would either read the dile or recognize the problem was an obsolete PDF format version.

Goodbye

Hello Jimjulian,

We apologize for the inconvenience caused, as per the description above, you are not able to open an old PDF file with Adobe Reader, Is that correct?

Try copying/dragging the PDF file on the desktop and try to open the PDF file and see if this brings any difference.

If you have Acrobat license/subscription, try printing the PDF file from Chrome as Acrobat's Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver and try opening the PDF file with freeware Adobe Reader or Acrobat.

Is it possible to share the file with us so that we can test it at our end? To share the file, please use Adobe Send feature, upload the file, share the link to files via private message only, How Do I Send Private Message

You may also refer to the Adobe article and see it that helps Resolve damaged document error when opening PDF files

Let us know how it goes and share your findings.

Regards,

Anand Sri.
