Open file menu not working

When I try to open a file in adobe reader XL and use the file open menu it ends up erroring out and throwing

"Error reading string file 'SETTINGSDLG' The file couldn't be opened (missing?) Row =-1, String =-1"

But opening a file using open with... works

Do you mean Reader XI? There's no such thing as Reader XL...

If so, that's a very old version, not compatible with almost any current OS, so problems are to be expected.

It's really recommended you update to the latest version, Reader DC: https://get.adobe.com/reader/
