Opening a scanned pdf on mac

I have scanned  documents on mac (10.14.2) to an HP printer, which appears on my desktop, but will not open.  I get the following error message:

Adobe Acrobat Reader could not open 'ancestry1.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Not sure when the problem started, but was working recently.

Apple can't help since it an Adobe product, and Adobe has not phone support

Would really appreciate advice

If I had to guess (which I do) I would say that your scanner is mislabeling some other type of file as a .pdf when maybe it is a .jpg. Or possibly you added that .pdf extension. Hard to say exactly.

Another possibility is that the scanner or something is corrupting that .pdf file (if it is indeed an actual .pdf). Do you have someplace you can save and share a link to the file if it doesn't contain any sensitive information?
