PDF files will not open in a Safari (v 6.0.5) browser window, OS 10.8.5. Version 11.0.04 Adobe Reader and Plug-ins installed. Both local and internet files do not load. What is happening here?

Read my post beneath the title. PDFs do not open - only a black screen is displayed. Local PDF files also do not display in the browser, but they do display in the  blessed app Adobe Reader. This problem occurred when I attempted to display a PDF from an internet archive of documents. I tried 2 other archive repositories with the same result. I have had no problems with previous versions of the Reader.

Further about this problem. The two plug-ins listed in above post are present, but, they have as the last opened date 5 September 2013 (get info to find this data). Since today's date is 16 September 2013 and I upgraded today to Adobe Reader v 11.0.04, and I tried many times today to read a PDF file in the browser, I do not understand why one or both of these two plug-ins would not have today's date as the last opened entry. It appears to me then that the plugins are not being called! But Safari says that the plugin “AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin" is installed. The other plugin is not mentioned in Safari's list of available plugins.

Just to clear up to rest of the members on this thread, plug-ins are never stored in Home/Library/Preferences/Internet Plug-Ins ... , which does not exist. They are stored in  /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/.. . The Preference file has no business with plug-ins. I presume that this was a typing error in Reply # 1.

I have also tried a restart of this computer, but the same error still occurs - no display of PDFs in a Safari browser window.

It works fine on my MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.5 and Safari 6.0.5.

When you say PDFs will not open what happens exactly?

    Try this:

    • Quit Safari
    • Launch Reader from your Applications folder.
    • Accept the EULA if prompted.
    • Check Reader >Preferences > Internet > Web Borwser Options> The blessed app should be " /Applications/Adobe Reader.app
    • Load PDF in Safari.

Please make sure the below plugins are installed and version is 11.0.04 :

    ~/Library/ Internet Plug-Ins/ AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin

    ~/Library/ Internet Plug-Ins/ AdobePDFViewer.plugin

    Thank You.
