PDFs won't open

Hello,

My PC (running on Windows 8.1) has without any warning, suddenly stopped opening PDFs.

When I click on a PDF, I get a message saying 'this app can't open - check the windows store for more information about Reader'.

I have checked that the programme associated with the file to open it is Adobe Reader and it is.

I have checked the programme list on the computer and I cannot find Reader there, though there are several other Adobe programmes listed.

I thought that perhaps Adobe Acrobat Reader might somehow have been accidentally deleted, so I have tried to install Adobe Acrobat Reader DC from scratch on about four different occasions and it refuses to install each time. It downloads the date, but will just not complete.

It just keeps saying that another version is already installed on the PC, though as stated, I cannot see this in the programme list.

Is anybody able to help please?

    Hi .Thank you for your reply and sorry not to have responded sooner.

    I was looking for Reader in the list of installed programmes. I actually found that the PC had allocated PDFs to be opened by Windows' own version of 'Reader'. When I typed my question and tried to download Acrobat, I was under the misapprehension that it was Adobe Acrobat Reader that was opening PDFs.

    My PC crashed for about a week after I added the above enquiry. On Sunday last, I had a Windows message asking me if I wanted to correct errors on my main disk drive on the PC and manually effect necessary repairs. It was such a relief as everything seemed to be working intermittently and then nothing at all. Since then, my PC seems to have returned to a much more efficient way of operation.
