Question

Permissions Password (ONCE AGAIN)

  • April 23, 2024

I've scoured countelss threads in this forum and cannot find a solution (even though plenty of thread have notated a "solution", none of which are... that ive found at least)

I am the author of the document. I did not set a permissions password when I dispatched the document for esign.

Why is there a permissions password if I did not set it?

Is this a default setting within the new Adobe Esign?

Where can I find the permissions password?

I want to clarify again due to the lack of accurate answers in previous threads. I am the author of this document and I did not set a permissions password.

Thank you,

Larry

Still nothing? Anybody? Any adobe employees out here that know their own product?

@Larry S.. first of all, I am not an Adobe Employee, just an Adobe user like you. So, please be gentle with me!

I was trying to replicate what is happening...I did create a PDF from Microsoft. A simple one for that matter. Exported the PDF. And re-opened in Acrobat. Added my 'e-sign' signature in Acrobat. I opened the file on a different computer, and I was NOT asked for a password!

Saved the file. If you can see, I can either save or Protect Using a Password ( @Amal. was correct in his first comment to you).

But, I had re-read your posts and comments.... the title of the post was 'Permissions...' which means to me....

  • Permissions password: Required to change permissions or remove security such as printing, or selecting text
  • Document open password: Required to open the document

Which made me think, you could turn off the 'Permissions' in your 'Document Properties' , Command D for the Mac or Control D for the PC.

There is a drop-down method for 'Security Method' ... hopefully, you can change this to be 'No Security'. On my end, each time I create a PDF, I have no security. But, if my sister asks and she normally sends passwrod-protected documents, this is how I would do it for her when she asks.

Hopefully this helps... will get a bite to eat, and will return in an hour to see how things went!

Thank you so much for your detailed response and investigation! This is by far the most help I've gotten on the subject.

I only mentioned Adobe Employees because I saw a few replies from them in this thread, but none of them have replied back.

I really appreciate your time and efforts!

I was actually just sending/receiving a newly created PDFs (from Acrobat Pro app) for signatures and had some documents to test once more.

I checked the security method prior to sending the document from Adobe E-sign and it was defauled to "No Security".  After E-signing the document, I tried to combine the file with another one (this is my main use case for needing to figure out the password protection feature and mastering it) but was requested to enter a password to unlock the document. SO close!

When I go into the security settings after the document is E-signed, "Password Protected" is selected and I am not able to make any changes to the security settings.

Esign protects the file with a password.

Welcome to the discussion Bernd. Glad you are catching on, yes. Esign 'protects' the file.

** I'll also add a question for the more simple minded; Why am I receiving a message stating to collect the password from the author of the document, when I am the author?

I am not very good at English, so I might be misunderstanding part of what Larry intended.

I have reviewed the PDF document Test.pdf. This PDF is not digital signed.

It seems that a password was set during the saving process from a WORD document.

If the PDF document was generated from a system other than WORD, that system might have assigned permissions.

If the PDF document was generated from WORD, isn’t it possible that permissions were assigned during the saving process in WORD?

I hope this helps! For your reference.

Thank you for responding.

Its definetly weird / odd that the document doesnt show the signature listed, im not sure why it isnt showing. It seems to be another error in Acrobat. The esignature is shown on the pdf document itself.... even more confusing that it doesnt register the signature but somehow, someway locked the document (inexplainable by even adobe employees).

I double checked my word doc and it was not password protected when it was converted to PDF so there wasnt any security settings carried over from Word.  More so, I can edit the PDF document after converting it from a Word doc, however after I esign it is when i receive the password message.

Appreciate your time and thoughts on this!

As soon as a document is signed, it can't be changed. That should be logical. I do not want documents to get changed after signing them.

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out.

Adobe Acrobat doesn't setup a password automatically, To understand it better, please confirm the following details:

  1. Is this an issue with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs and how exactly its created?
  2. Are there any signature fields or have you applied any Digital Signature on it?
  3. Is it Document Open password or Permission password to edit the file?

Please try to send a sample PDF for e-sign to yourself for testing and see if th issue occurrs? Also, please share the PDF file in question with us so we can check it at our end.

Hi Amal,

1. It is with every PDF after using Adobe Esign to send out documents for signatures.

2. Yes. There are signature fields.

3. Where is the setting for Open Password or Permission Password in Adobe Esign? Apparently, as mentioned before, this IS permission password (being that is the reason I reached out in the first place). I did not set the permission password. This was IN FACT set by Esign.  This is conclusive based upon the fact that this only happens to PDFs processed through Adobe Esign.  PDFs that do not need to be Esigned and have not been processed through Esign do not present the Permission Password request when I make changes.

Ive attached a PDF file that I have esigned myself as a test document. After I signed the PDF and downloaded the file, I was greeted with the same notification requesting a Permission Password (same as the one i attached in my initial thread message). It states that if i do not have the password, to contact the author of the document.
