Question

Printing a fillable form from Adobe.

I have a fillable form that someone filled out and then sent to me. When I try to print it anywhere that was a checkbox or a radio button has a black box overtop of it when I try to print it. Even the ones that are not selected. I’ve gone into the print settings and turned off “use local fonts” and tried to “Print as Image” and neither fix it.

    Hi @trinity_4646

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out. We are sorry you're experiencing this issue.

Please try the steps below in order and let us know if that works:

    1. What is the version of the Acrobat Reader and the OS you are using?
Open the app and go to Help > About Acrobat and try updating it to the latest version available go to Help > Check for updates. If an update installs, restart your machine and try printing again.

    2. Check for any pending/missing updates for the printer driver and firmware and try updating them to the latest version, you may also try to remove the printer driver/firmware, reboot the device and reinstall them from the printer manufacturer’s website and see if that works.

    3. Try "Save As" to create a clean copy, then print
The file you received may have a damaged or unusual field definition. In Acrobat/Reader, choose File > Save As and save the file under a new name and check for the issue.

    4.  Open the new copy and try printing, print to "Adobe PDF" (Windows) or "Save as PDF" (Mac), then print that file. This flattens the form fields into static content and almost always resolves driver-side rendering issues: File > Print, In the Printer dropdown, choose Adobe PDF (Windows) or Save as PDF (Mac). Save the resulting file, open it, and print it normally to your physical printer.

    5. As a quick test, try a different printer or driver, If you have access to another printer (even a "Print to PDF" option), printing there will tell us whether the issue is the file itself or the interaction between this specific PDF and your current printer driver.

If none of the above resolves it, it would help us troubleshoot further if you could share:

    • Your operating system and version (e.g., Windows 11, macOS Sonoma 14.x)
    • The exact version of Acrobat or Reader (Help > About Adobe Acrobat / Reader)
    • Your printer make and model
    • A screenshot of the printed output (or a scan of it) alongside the on-screen view of the same page
    • If you're able to share the PDF itself (with any sensitive info redacted), that would let us pinpoint whether the issue lives in the form or in the rendering pipeline.

Let us know how it goes.
