problem with adobe reader

I have used the free adobe reader on my laptop (macbook air) for years without issues. Recently the app started freezing every time I open it even before I can open a PDF. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall on my laptop multiple times and the app continues to freeze every time and I have to force quit since it says "application not responding" and I cannot resolve this. Any suggestions/help?
