Read Mode View not working only shows pdf in Full Screen Mode

When I open any pdf in Adobe Acrobat Reader, I am unable to view the file on my screen when I ask for it to open in Read Mode; the files will only be viewed in Full Screen Mode. I am running OS. Please send me ideas and help! Thanks.
