Reader keeps going to black screen WHILE I'm using

Why does reader keep going to black WHILE I'M USING IT? I just turned on my tablet and opened reader. About 1 minute after I opened the document, the screen went black. I wish I could say this was a rare event but it can occur multiple times over a short period of time.
