Update 21208 of Acrobat Reader breaks the app, it won’t start on Windows 7.

It shows “This program couldn’t launch because the object api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll is missing” or something along those lines.

...Please fix.

Acrobat Reader 32-bit, Win 7 SP1 64-bit

If you want to quickly and easily get Acrobat working do this.

You don’t need to uninstall the latest problem Acrobat version 25.001.21223, you just need to download the missing dll file.

If you install an older version of Acrobat it will soon update itself to the latest version anyway, so I suggest you just stick with the latest version.

If you previously uninstalled Acrobat, get the latest version from here:

    https://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise

Select Windows 7 and English (UK)

    There is only one version

Reader 2025.001.21223 English UK for Windows (32 bit)

    1. To get the missing dll file follow these steps

    2. Go to this website

    https://www.dllme.com/dll/files/api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0

    3. Scroll down and click on the large DOWNLOAD (in pink)

(Ignore any of the Ads that appear – don’t click on them)

(Ignore anything that says ‘Click to Continue’ – these are ads)

    4. Acrobat Reader is 32 bit, so you only need to download the 32 bit one

    5. Get the 32 bit version

Many different versions of the file are shown (most have same version number)

Scroll down and locate the x86 - 32 Bit one (the first one for version 10.0.9904.0 will do,

OR BETTER STILL the one which states this is middle column:

    SHA256: 4fb6b6b759a6d9184b8d032bad76516ca8539c6102de02bc1e8de568bb

    )

Click on DETAILS (in pink), and then START DOWNLOAD (in pink)

    6. This file will be in your explorer downloads folder

    api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0_x86

It’s a zipped file so double click on it and explorer will unzip it

    7. On a pc that is 64 bit cpu:

    You WILL have folder SysWOW64

    Copy the file shown api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll

    to C:\Windows\SysWOW64

    8. On a pc that is 32 bit cpu:

You will NOT have folder SysWOW64

    Copy the file shown api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll

    C:\Windows\System32

    9. Once file has been copied, just start Acrobat Reader. No need to restart first.

Don’t bother trying to stop Acrobat from any future updates, you may not be able to. Others have tried without success.

Thanks HJ.  ...Quite the exercise indeed.  Perhaps after this bit of flaming, they’ll be more careful to test updates before releasing final product versions.

I also had an update on 2/20/26 that broke Reader on my Win 7 computer.  I uninstalled it and reinstalled the version from the Adobe website that said it was specifically for Win 7, and it doesn’t work, either.  It seems to me that if a version is advertised as compatible with Win 7, it should actually work on Win 7?  Another website suggested installing an “archived version” of Reader from “Adobe’s official distribution archives”, with a date earlier than 2/20, but I was not able to find these archived versions on Adobe’s website.  Has anyone found them?

Somehow on 2/20/2026 an Adobe Acrobat Reader update was installed on my Win 7 computer and I could no longer open pdf files. I ran the “repair” routine but it did not fix the problem. I uninstalled  Acrobat Reader in preparation for installing an old version that came with my motherboard back in 2015. But then a strange thing happened. After rebooting and without installing anything I was suddenly able to open pdf’s once again. I assume Win 7 must somehow be able to open pdf’s without the need for Acrobat Reader. So seems I have no further need for Acrobat Reader. Problem fixed!

    Win7 Pro 64bit Problems:

Followed most of the replies given but ...

    1. Installer wouldn’t install to my E:  Hard disc ~750GB (C: is 128GB SSD ).Kept giving me a message that the target folder wasn’t empty, when the target folder didn’t even exist on E:. I only changed the suggested C:/xxxx to E:/xxxx.
    2. Installed to C:/xxxx
    3. Downloaded  dll from source suggested by HelpfulJohn
    4. Moved dll to windows/system32. Reader wouldn’t start.
    5. Moved dll to windows/system. Reader started.
    6. Can’t find anything in Reader to stop updates.
Hope that gives you a few more clues on what to try. But this is a shocking failure by Adobe to test an update before release.

Has anyone tried blocking Adobe access using their anti virus / firewall ?

Coming up with a fix??? Adobe has this same response for the last month...seriously? I am not ‘techie’ so downloading a .dll isn’t something I am interested in doing. YOU broke it, FIX IT! Not in 6 months, not in a month, this should have been done in max 72 hours from when it happened. I have legal files I’m trying to view and print and can’t. Downloading a third party pdf is simply looking to obtain a virus. At least give us some name of another reputable program we can use until Adobe gets their you know what together.  For a company of this magnitude, THIS is enough to make people abandon ship completely.

As a quick workaround without installing an alternative PDF viewer (like SumatraPDF) or an older version of Acrobat Reader, you can use your web browser for viewing PDF files.

Also see my comment about installing a previous version 25.001.20997 compatible with Windows 7 and preventing further auto-updating it to incompatible version.

On Windows 7 Pro, after getting the latest Reader update, now I also get the error, api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll file is missing when I start Acrobat Reader. Until Adobe fixes this error, what's the latest version of Reader that still works with Windows 7? I need Acrobat Reader to do my daily work.

Your best bet is to just download the DLL file and drop it in...not holding my breath for an official Adobe fix here.

I´ve tried to download the dll file and drop it in, but it did not work. And I tried to update Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable. It did not work either.

I think Adobe should solve the problem.

Same here, as my Acrobat Pro doesn’t open or work as it has since the recent update. I reinstalled it twice and the ERROR MESSAGE still appears. Sadly I’ve paid them $$ for years with NO ISSUES UNTIL NOW!  🤑

FIX IT OR FACE LOSING LOYAL CUSTOMERS. I only hope Adobe will quickly fix this issue, as I use it to prepare Federal Tax Documents for my clients.  😡
