Reading PDF after "saving"on Mac.

Many publications that have been sent (usually purchased) cannot be opened after I "save" them on my MAC.  They are downloaded from original source in pdf. format which can be read before I "save".  But when I try to open from the saved document, it says "

Adobe Reader could not open 'XXX.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

I have tried to download the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC as suggested, but it will not install because "I don't have necessary authorization to install this software.  Make sure you have administrative privilege before trying again."  I have a new password, but that doesn't seem to be what is wanted.

Now what?

How are you saving them to your Mac (what steps)? How are you trying to open them? Do you have any version of Adobe Reader installed now?

That is your operating system requiring your administrative password before allowing an install. You need that.
