Reading slow PDFs?

Hello!

Generally,i need to first take a look at all the pages of every book i want to read,so i open the PDFs by adobe reader xi,then i press and hold the "right arrow" key,and for good PDFs it turns the pages fast, and i can see which pages have picture or formula,... .In some books as the PDF athttps://archive.org/details/handbooktomuseum00wari ,doing the "pressing and holding" is not fast ,and it from a page jumps to some later page but the next one,so it doesnt show some pages over the process. Please download the pdf to see what i mean, and tell me how to read an slow pdf fast.

I've tried that on another computer with better hardware(higher Cpu,Ram,and graphics),but the issue still was there. Please, also tell me if there is a computer with more better hardware on which i would not face the issue?

Best,

    Hi Joshm,

I was having a similar issue with my adobe reader on a newer computer bogged down with a lot of institutional security software. I did this to make the arrow keys scroll faster.

After I found your post, I tried the left and right key for page scrolling, and it seemed to work relatively fast. If I held down the arrow key, the page would seem to stay set and then when I let go, it would jump a large number of pages, but if I pressed the arrow quickly, it tended to load with pictures with no problem. (sometimes if I press too quickly, it will not fully load a picture before going to the next page)

What I did was try to remove any item that seemed to require any amount of graphical computing power.

    So, my actions:

I went to Preferences. Edit > Preferences

    In the different categories

    General:

Set "Scale for screen resolution (restart required): to "No scaling"

    Page Display:

         Resolution:

Set to "Use system setting"     (mine was set to custom resolution, and this seemed to have the biggest impact on the speed of pages loading)

         Rendering:

Disable (uncheck) "Smooth line art", "Smooth Images", "Enhance thin lines", and "Use page cache"

I left "Use local fonts" enable, and set smooth text to "For Monitor" (since I'm on a monitor) Selecting "None" on smooth text setting didn't seem to help much in speeding up the movement.

Last note: Be sure to check if the PDF you're viewing is in Protected View. This should come up as a yellowish- beige notification bar across the top of the PDF with a button that says "Enable All Features". I've found that Protected view will slow down PDF navigation to a completely unacceptable speed. So much that it can take a full second to load the next page, even if it's only text with no pictures. (not very useful if you ask me)

    For reference:

    HP Elitebook 8470p

Win 10 64 bit (institutional image)

    Intel i5-3230M

    8 GB

    I hope this helps!!

I suspect your problem is that some pages are complex and take time to display, but the scroll rate is constant and too fast to catch up with the page. Have you considered using the thumbnails view in Acrobat? You can make the view area wide and Djust icon size, then scroll fast through the thumbnails.

    Thanks for the reply,

    I 'd tried that before.It doesn't make a big difference.

    Hi Joshm,

As you have mentioned in the reply 2 to download the file attached, I am not able to find any attachment there.

Please refer the steps mentioned here How to share a file using Adobe Document Cloud to share the file.

We will check it at our end once we get the file.

Also, the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is a free software.

It does not ask for the card information. You can install the application from here Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution

You can also do the steps mentioned in reply 2 in Adobe Reader XI as well.

Try the steps and check if that makes any difference.

    Regards,

    Meenakshi

    Hi Joshm,

Sorry for the delay in response.

I downloaded the file and checked it at my end.

If I understand you correctly the issue is when you press and hold the right arrow key, the pages move fast but the content is not visible.

You need to press the key and wait for the text to appear before moving to next page. Am I correct?

It seems to be the file specific issue as the file is a scanned copy.

Also, the PDF is not created using the Adobe PDF maker.

Try to print the file to Adobe PDF. Find the steps below:

    Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and click on Print file icon to open the print window. See the screenshot;

Select the Adobe PDF from the Printer list.

Now print the file and save it.

Once done, open the newly saved file and check if it works.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards,

    Meenakshi

    Thanks for your reply,

You were almost right. The point is that as you mentioned "You need to press

the key and wait for the text to appear before moving to next page" takes

much time.I need to see which pages of such slow PDFs has pictures,as fast

    as

the file i have attached, please download it then try the key pressing

    procces.

I can't download the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC,it wants my card number which

i don't have one.If it was possible please you do it then let me know if it

became as fast as the attached file,or close to it.

    Sinerely,
