Right Side Panel won't stay closed.

I've seen a ton of posts about this and I still can't seem to get this to work.  When I  open a PDF from my file directory, it opens with the RIGHT side panel popped out. This is NOT the tools. This is the Bookmarks/AI/Comments/Thumbnails/etc icons.  I don't want this panel to popout. Especially when I open a document. I've already attempted the Menu-Preferences-Documents-Remember the current state of Tools pane and the Restore last view settings when reopening documents. It doesn't change anything.  I'm losing my mind trying to figure out how to get rid of all these things so I can see my document. I'm so tired of clicking the tiny X to close the popout; there has to be a backdoor solution to make this work.
