Having successfully installed Acrobat Reader DC and specified it as my .pdf default reader, it appears in both Start menu and Task bar as a 'Photo' document icon.  How can I change these to the proper Adobe icons?

    Hello Iwardcam,

We're sorry for the trouble you had with the Adobe Reader icon which changed into a Photo icon. Please close any opened PDF and Adobe Reader, then reboot the machine once. Try the following steps mentioned below and let us know how it goes:

Assuming you are using Windows machine:

    • Remove, unpin or delete Adobe Acrobat Reader icon from the Start Menu, the desktop and (if you have it there) from the taskbar.
    • Go to C: > ProgramData > Microsoft > Windows > Start Menu > Programs and you'll find the "file creating issue" "Adobe Acrobat Reader DC" with the wrong icon. The that looks like a shortcut. Delete it!.. Close the window.
    • Go to C: > Program Files (x86) > Adobe > Acrobat Reader DC > Reader... and find Acrobat.exe
    • Right click on Reader.exe > Send to > Desktop (the .exe. file can be Acrobat Reader)
    • Right-click again on Reader.exe > Pin to Start Menu... and close the window
    • Right click on Reader.exe - shortcut (that you just created on your desktop) > Copy
    • Go back to C: > ProgramData > Microsoft > Windows > Start Menu > Programs... and Paste the shortcut here (you need administrator privileges for that)
    • Rename this shortcut from "Reader.exe - shortcut" to "Adobe Acrobat Reader DC"
    • Close the window
    • Now if you open any PDF document, the right icon will appear on the taskbar.

If the issue still persists, please use Acrobat cleaner tool to remove Adobe Reader Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs

Reboot the machine and install the latest version of Adobe Reader from Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution

Let us know how it goes and share your observation.

    Thanks,

    Anand Sri.
