Question

Setting Reader startup preferences

I use Reader to markup student submissions using the Comment tool, many each day.

It would save many unnecessary button clicks if Reader always opened a PDF file with Comments activated.

I cannot find any way to do this.

Where can this setting be made?

Thank you

BTW It is impossible to copy the version number from the Help> About box.  This is crass and unhelpful.

I am using the current version (I think)

Hi @CVHManchester ,

It seems that you would like the Comments pane to open automatically whenever you open a PDF. Please confirm if I have understood this correctly. If this is not what you’re asking for, feel free to share more details—providing a short screen recording might help clarify.

To ensure that the Comments pane opens automatically for PDFs with comments, you can enable the following preference:

Steps to do this:

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat Reader and launch the Preferences dialog by pressing Ctrl+K on Windows or Cmd+K on Mac.
  2. In the Preferences window, select Commenting from the left-hand panel.
  3. Check the box for "Show comments pane when a PDF with comments is opened."
  4. Click OK to save the changes and close the Preferences window.

Please note that the Comments pane will open automatically only if the PDF contains at least one comment with text.

I hope this resolves your request. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Best regards,

Arvind

Arvindy

Thank you for your help

 1. When I open a document, I want the Comments pane to open and the sticky note icon to be activated.

2. All these many documents I open are student submissions that require, but do not have any, commenting.

So I think your reply is that what I am asking for is not possible in Reader. Shame since it is my major use of Reader.

Is it available in Pro?

If it is not available, would a request to provide this feature result in a change in the program?

I shall explore if it is available in other PDF editing programs.

Hi @CVHManchester ,

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, this functionality is not available in Adobe Acrobat or Reader.
Kindly visit the link to request this feature : https://acrobat.uservoice.com/forums/590923-acrobat-for-windows-and-mac

Try to revert to the Classic UI: https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/acrobat-2023-how-to-revert-to-classic-gui-user-interface/td-p/14052807

In which a single click is enough to display the Comments panel and its tools.

Thank you

The link seems to be out of date. -there is no Hamburger in the version I am using.

However, View> Enable new Acrobat Reader is there, which is not what I want.

Presumably from your reply, what I am asking for does not exist.

Is there any way to suggest this to Adobe, and would they take any notice if I did?

If you can see "Enable new Acrobat" and if you cannot see the hambuger menu this means that you're not using the "new UI" and that you're using the "Classic UI".

I haven't used Acrobat Reader for a long time, but my answer is true in Acrobat Pro.
(You can't have both versions on the same computer)
