Signing a PDF document with an personal digital ID.

We use a personal ID within Adobe Reader DC to sign and lock a PDF document. When setting this Digital ID/signature into a PDF document, we have to take several actions. First we have to select the personal ID (it's just one), then we have to check that the document has to be locked and then we have to save the document before we send it. Is there no easier way? Do we have to save the document first?
