Question

"There was a problem while reading a stream" opening from email

Hello, our practice management system generates PDF letters that get emailed to other dentists. One dental practice keeps getting a "there was a problem while opening a stream" trying to open the letter on their end.

Thoughts?

I am checking to see if they have a different version of Adobe, and it they are trying to open the document directly from the email vs. downloading it first.

Thanks!

Hello,

I hope you're doing well, and we apologize for the delayed response and the trouble.

This error typically occurs due to a corrupted PDF file, incomplete download, or compatibility issues. Follow these steps to resolve it:

  1. Download the Attachment First:

    • Do not open the PDF directly from the email. First, save the attachment to your device. Right-click the email attachment and select "Save As" to ensure the file is fully downloaded.

  2. Ensure that the users have the latest version of Acrobat installed on the machine: 25.001.20428 Planned update, Mar 04, 2025. Check for any pending updates from the Menu > help > check for updates, install the updates, restart the app and the machine, and check. For more information, see this: https://adobe.ly/3QIWwSq.
  3. Disable Protected Mode in Acrobat Reader:

    • Protected Mode can sometimes prevent PDFs from opening correctly. To disable it:
      • Go to Menu> Preferences > Security (Enhanced).
      • Uncheck Enable Protected Mode at startup.
      • Click OK and restart Acrobat Reader.
      • Enable the security settings after the test.
  4. See this article to repair the PDF: https://adobe.ly/4inPZIu

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Anand Sri.
