This thing at the bottom of the PDF page
How do I make it go away forever? It's not helpful. It blocks text at the bottom of the page that I want to read, highlight, comment on, copy, etc.

Click on the rightmost icon (with the arrow pointing upwards) and that will cause the contents of what you call “the thing at the bottom” to be merged with the tools at the top of the window.
