Unable to open PDFs in tabs instead of windows - Reader DC

I have always been able to open all of my PDF files in tabs of the same window.  Suddenly today that does not happen, and every single PDF opens as a new window - which I HATE.  All of the older forum posts about changing this setting reference an option that is no longer in the menu  (Edit - Preferences - General - check  "Open documents as new tabs in same windows" 
Any ideas to resolve this headache?

I think the version of Acrobat Reader DC may indeed be critical. Please don't say "latest", we need a string like 2016.123.12323. Please let us know if you need help finding out.

Thank you for reaching out and sorry for the trouble.

 

As you have mentioned the option "Open documents as new tabs in same windows" in the preferences is not available, please share the screenshot of the Preferences window.

Share the current version of the application and OS on the machine.
