want to collaborate

Hi there, I am a university student. I am doing a massive literature review with a partner. We have all of our saved articles as PDF files. We want to be able to collaborate on them so that we can read them separately but be able to see each other's comments and highlighting. We both have MacBooks. This was very easy to do with pages documents but I cannot seem to figure out how this works for adobe or PDF files. Please help!
