White and black boxes covering text

I am experiencing an issue with adobe acrobat reader. When I am reading PDFs, the screen keeps changing to show black and white checks covering the text. I am using the latest version, but this issue did exist on the other version too. I have tried repairing the installation but this did not make a difference. The problem does not exist all the time, but it makes working with the documents highly frustrating.
