Why am I unable to edit documents showing pdf and Adobe Acrobat

I have several documents that I need to change/add to /or edit.  When I click on it I am given the option Edit pdf yet I cannot.  This was something I had been doing with no problem with my previous laptop.  I purchased a new one, same model, same everything and now all I get is that stupid pop up about upgrading to a paid subscription.  Why should I buy something that I could do for free before?
