Why does Acrobat Reader DC not properly display documents from a USB stick?

There is no problem with the same USB stick using Acrobat Reader on a different laptop. Both devices running Windows 10.

Does it work to copy the files from the memory stick to the hard drive (desktop) first, then open from there?

No. Have now determined that the problem applies only to documents scanned onto the memory stick using my Epson WF-7610 printer.

Other pdf documents on the memory stick are OK.
