Adobe Acrobat XI in IE11 - Cannot Access Registry

I am running Adobe Acrobat XI on a Windows 8.1 PC and I cannot view PDFs in IE11. The error message is simply "Cannot access the registry" with the header "Adobe Acrobat". I was on the latest update (11.0.09) and then uninstalled the program to roll back to the original version, but that made no difference.

Since I am on Windows 8, I don't have the option to roll back to an older IE version. Since I am in Acrobat XI, I cannot tell Adobe to not open in IE. If I install Adobe Reader I can view PDF files in IE, but we need Acrobat only to be installed to work with some software we are running.

Any thoughts as to how to fix this? I had this happen on another PC before and was able to restore to an earlier date when it was working, and the problem has not resurfaced. I tried that on this PC, but rolling back to the earliest date did not help.
