Cannot preview filetype please download the file for viewing and garbled text on a downloaded image

Dear Madam or Sir,

When I click on a file titled "Subject Access Request Letter re Account Number 12527629 Sort Code 60-10-34 24022015.pdf", which is stored in my Account on Acrobat.com I get the response "Cannot preview filetype please download the file for viewing". This file was created from an OpenOffice .odt document of the same title. Please advise.

I downloaded an image, which purports to be a .pdf, from the Royal Mail Track & Trace web facility using my Samsung S5. The text that I expect to see might as well be hieroglyphics for all its similarity to text. Please advise.

PS I have tried to attach both files (.pdf) but am advised "That image type is forbidden". Please advise.

Hi Ron,

In your steps, you mention at step #6 that you save the file as a secured PDF. Files that have security applied cannot be previewed from within the client, which is why you are getting the "Cannot preview filetype please download the file for viewing" message. This message displays for both full preview and hover preview. Once you download the file, you should be able to view it without error (within the constraints of the applied security).

The hovering behavior you are reporting is expected. If you hover over a file name, you will see "hover preview" after a couple of seconds which allows you to get a smaller preview of the file (rather than having to open it in full preview). This only displays if you hover over a file name, not in the blank area of each row, so that you don't continually have previews popping up.

Hi Rahul,

Apologies for taking so long to reply. I do not usually log into Acrobat.com. However the same problem has occurred with files that I have stored while viewing them with Acrobat Reader. For instance, today I have:

  1. scanned a document and saved the scan as a .pdf. The scanner is a Brother MFC-J6510DW A3 Scanner.
  2. uploaded the .pdf to Google Drive.
  3. downloaded the .pdf (on Google Drive) as an OpenOffice document
  4. opened the OpenOffice document and using a rectangle hid some text on the document.
  5. saved the document as an OpenOffice document with the same filename.
  6. exported the document as a Password protected .pdf (Secured) file with the same filename but having the extension .pdf.
  7. opened the new .pdf  with Acrobat Reader and stored the pdf in Acrobat.com
  8. When I try to open the .pdf stored in Acrobat.com I get the message "Cannot preview filetype please download the file for viewing"
  9. When I click on the word "download", which is in blue characters, I can save the .pdf to my Laptop and open it with no problem.

I hope you can offer a solution to this problem

Hi Ron,

So basically your concern is this - "Cannot preview filetype please download the file for viewing" error message however you are able to view that file once it is downloaded...Is that right?

Hi Rahul,

That is correct. It now happens on every filename that I hover the cursor over. It does not happen if the cursor is not over the filename but over the blank part of the row which is not taken up by the filename. When I click anywhere on the filename row the file downloads and appears correctly either replacing the previously downloaded file or creates a portal to Acrobat.com if I clicked on Tools/Store Files/"Open Acrobat.com Files".

A new question: When uploading to Acrobat.com Files a .pdf stored locally, is there a way of uploading to a specific sub-folder or if no sub-folder creating a sub-folder(s) and then the .pdf automatically uploads to the final sub-folder created at that moment?

I read your post thoroughly and i am unable to interpret your issue. Could you please elaborate it in more detail?

Can you let me know that which application was used to create this pdf?

Moreover when you Download the PDF File (Subject Access Request Letter re Account Number 12527629 Sort Code 60-10-34 24022015.pdf )

Is it like it is supposed to be a pdf but it turn out to be a file in image format? Is this what you meant by your statement.
