converting pdf to word file

You're likely doing nothing wrong. What are you using the convert the file to Word (ExportPDF/Adobe Acrobat)?

When you convert to Word, the ExportPDF service and Acrobat perform OCR (optical character recognition) on the file, and convert image text to selectable/editable text. However, depending on how that PDF file was created, it may not contain all information necessary to create a clean conversion (this can be the case with non-Adobe PDFs).

In any case, here are a couple of things that you can try: triple-click to select the text in Word, and make sure that Enable Editing is selected at the top of the Word doc.
