How do I shut off some of the bells and whistles that open when I start up the system. There are too many tool bars...

When I open an adobe pdf doc, tool bars appear right and left sides and bottom. They are so big they actually obscure the doc I'm looking at. Is there a way to dismantle the tool bars, hide them etc. but have them readily available when I want to use them?
