What am I able to do with Adobe Acrobat, apparently nothing I need to edit a document why will it not allow it

Please let us know what you mean by "will not allow it." Are you getting an error? Are the editing tools missing/ dimmed?

Here are a couple of things that could be causing the issue you're facing:

The PDF file is secured, and the document author has disallowed changes to the PDF. (Do you see SECURED in the title bar?)
The PDF file is open in Adobe Reader, rather than Acrobat. (I do this all the time without knowing it as I have both Reader and Acrobat installed.) Reader doesn't allow you to edit PDF files.

Please let us know if either of those things holds true for you.
