you either don't have a reader plugin for your browser or you have a security setting preventing/blocker preventing non-local pdfs from opening in your browser.

I just experienced a situation where someone sent me a PDF and when I opened it all of the boxes in the document were empty...even if I saved to my hard drive and then opened it.  My emails are also sent to my phone and the content of the PDF was viewable and printable from there.  I have received lots of PDFs from people and haven't had any problems until now.

This usually happens when the file has been filled-in using a non-compliant PDF viewer.

Instruct the users to stick with Adobe Reader for best results.
