Why are my files "automatically" converting to pdf files? I prefer to convert only when needed.

Please provide me with the instructions to resolve this issue. For background purposes, the option to convert from pdf to Word was working just fine until 24 hours ago. Also, I am presently unable to export from Word to creation of a "pdf". Please provide necessary instructions to resolve this issue. Thank you!
