Question

Banding

Hi,

I’ve designed a greeting card using gradient backgrounds. However, when exporting the design as a PDF, I noticed that banding-like patterns appear in the gradient areas. This issue is not visible during the design process itself, but becomes noticeable after exporting the file. Interestingly, when exporting the same design as a PNG, the gradients appear smooth and the banding does not occur.

I would like to understand:

- Why does this issue happen?

- Are there any recommended settings to reduce or avoid banding?

- Is there any workaround within Adobe Express to preserve smooth gradients in PDF output?!

    Hi @ZZWang,

Welcome to the Adobe Express community! We’re sorry to hear about this. Could you please answer a few questions below-

    • Which PDF export setting are you using (e.g., Standard vs Print quality)?
    • Did you try using another browser?
    • Does the banding appear when you zoom in/out, or is it consistent at all zoom levels?
    • What type of gradient are you using (linear, radial, multiple stops)?

Is it possible to share the difference you see between the editor and the exported PDF? Also, can you share the file with me via DM with edit access so I can investigate further?

    Regards,

    Tarun

    Hi Tarun,

    • I’ve tried all four export options (PNG, JPG, PDF, and PDF Print), and only the PNG output appears smooth. Both PDF and PDF Print show visible banding in the gradient background.
    • No, but I’ve tested this on different laptops, and the issue persists across devices.
    • The banding is consistent at all zoom levels.
    • I’m using linear gradients and have tested both vertical and horizontal directions, the issue persists in all cases.

I’ve attached the PDF (Print) and a screenshot from the editor interface. The link has been shared via DM.

    Look forward to your reply!
